MLA were commissioned in 2018 to design a large two storey extension and convert an attic space to an existing bungalow. The clients brief was to create a south facing extension, creating a very large open plan Living/Dining /Family space and a new kitchen with enlarged utility room connected to the garden with large sliding doors. Rooflights were added to provide additional daylight into the deep plan spaces and the number of bedrooms was increased from two to four, with three on the first floor in an attic extension/conversion.
The clients had returned to Edinburgh from overseas were also very keen to increase the thermal performance of the building through high levels of insulation and underfloor heating. Edinburgh contains many traditional bungalows built in the 1920s on large plots. This example contained two bedrooms and sat on a sloping site. It was in fact one of a few remaining that was in its original form. The attic had not been converted or extended.
