MLA were commissioned in early 2020 to design the “Bee House” project. The clients’ brief was to enlarge and reimagine a north facing extension, creating a very large open plan split level Living/Dining /family space and a new kitchen with enlarged utility room. All the new spaces were designed to be covered in a new green roof, planted up with native wildflowers, providing food for beehives installed in the garden. Rooflights were added to provide additional daylight into the deep plan spaces.
Edinburgh is the home of many traditionally constructed bungalows, generally built in the 1920s on large garden plots. This semi-detached example contains three bedrooms and an existing extension to a west facing elevation and one to the North. The attic had also been converted to create a small study bedroom.
