Edinburgh contains many traditional bungalows built in the 1920s on large garden plots. This well-maintained example is seated on a south facing sloping site, with a north facing rear elevation to the house that contained small traditional windows and limited access to the mature garden.

The project brief was to create a space where the clients could enjoy the privacy and beauty of that rear garden. MLA developed a mono pitched Garden Room Extension space with an overhanging eaves gable which opened up an existing room to allow a free-flowing ground floor space flooded with natural daylight. The external materials chosen were zinc cladding with a horizontal seam and a zinc mono-pitched roof. The inclusion of large picture windows wrapped around the inside facing corner helped emphasize the diagonal view across the garden.
