MLA were commissioned in 2023 to undertake an extensive redesign of an existing 2011 extension to the rear of a Victorian family home in Edinburgh. The proposal involved enlarging both the patio doors and existing kitchen windows to improve the connection between the house and a recently renovated modern garden space.

The client wanted the daylight to flood the reorganised family rooms, whilst retaining as much of the existing external fabric as possible. A central section of dark grey zinc cladding was introduced to mirror the ceramic garden tiles and change the architectural language of the extension in contrast to the buff stonework and vertical emphasis of the historic house, better expressing the new horizontal glazing. The carbon footprint was also significantly improved with attic and wall insulation and triple glazed windows and patio doors.

Clients commented “we are delighted with the project and the modern approach taken by MLA which brought new life to an existing extension building in the 1980s.
