The client purchased an existing two storey semi-detached Victorian villa in Edinburgh with a view to creating a modern “statement” extension leading to a secluded and spacious garden. The brief was simply to create space for the client’s art and modern furniture collection, maximising space and light on a tight budget using modern materials.

MLA developed a simple gable extension which opened the existing rooms to allow a free-flowing ground floor space flooded with natural daylight from new rooflights. A new entrance was formed, and the internal staircase was removed to create space for a double height open plan living / dining room space connected to an open plan kitchen.

The modern external materials chosen were sustainable zinc cladding with a horizontal seam and a stone slip frontage. The inclusion of horizonal windows help emphasise the modern feel of the renovated home in contrast to the Victorian original.
