In 2016 MLA were commissioned to prepare design proposals for two New High Court Solemn Courtrooms in the Grade A Listed High Court of Justiciary designed by William Stark in 1807 which was built in a Greek revival style and extended in the 1990’s to the side and rear by the Ministry of Justice’s Architects prior to devolution.

One of the new courtrooms was located in a former Faculty Room and the other in a former public cafeteria. The project also included a wide range of ancillary accommodation to allow close collaboration of operational staff and create modern “fit for purpose” Courtrooms. Importantly, the project regenerated and breathed new life into the Saltmarket Listed Building.

MLA, in consultation with Glasgow Council Conservation Planners, felt it important that the Saltmarket Courtroom retained and incorporated many original and ornate historic features. The project also involved significant internal alterations to ancillary rooms and a full services upgrade which required careful integration with the historic fabric to retain as many original features as possible.
