The client, Roger Coulthard purchased the Mews Building to No 5 Royal Circus in 2016 to create a family home. The existing building was historic, and originally built as part of the New Town Development in the early 19th Century and later converted. Maps dating back to 1804 clearly indicate the Mews Houses.

At time of purchase the accommodation was used as a workshop and had deteriorated into a very poor state of repair. Following Archaeological and Conservation Surveys it was clear a very limited number of original features remained. Once stripped back to the bare bones, the existing stonework was carefully refurbished and indented where required in accordance with HES Conservation standards.

The building was one and a half storeys high and dormers to the front were retained and fully refurbished. The MLA design breathed new life into the building creating open plan spaces on the ground and first floor connected by a new timber staircase. Additional rooflights were added to ensure that the upper floor Living room was flooded with daylight.
