MLA were commissioned in early 2014 to design this ICF extension project to
Luckarthow Cottage which is in a beautiful rural location surrounded by forestry and farmland, 5 miles outside the town of Auchterarder in Perthshire.

The traditional stone built single storey cottage sits in a steeply sloping site and the split-level extension was designed with a large window to work with the site and take advantage of the wonderful natural landscape

This type of traditional building is essentially uninsulated and aside from a large woodburning stove, was very cold in winter. The client was very keen to utilise ICF – Insulated Concrete Formwork Blocks for the entire extension. These are a practical and energy efficient system designed to offer a range of performance standards and maintain a comfortable temperature all year round and are a recommended “Passivhaus” system.
